TRADING AROUND GEOPOLITICS International trade is shaped not only by economic factors but also by geopolitical elements such as political relations between states, security concerns, and global power balances. In recent years, geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts observed in the world economy have led to the restructuring of global trade networks, significantly affecting countries’ trade policies, supply chains, and export strategies. In this context, the seminar titled “Trade Around Geopolitics” aims to examine the effects of geopolitical developments on international trade from a multidimensional perspective. Within the scope of the seminar, particular emphasis will be placed on the new international conjuncture that emerged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This development prompted Western countries, particularly the European Union and the United States, to impose comprehensive economic sanctions on Russia, which in turn led to significant changes in global trade flows. In this process, the foreign trade dynamics of countries such as Türkiye—maintaining strong economic relations with the West while also sustaining trade ties with Russia—have gained particular importance. The seminar will discuss the changes observed in Türkiye’s exports to Russia following the implementation of Western sanctions, in light of both theoretical frameworks and empirical findings. By addressing the phenomenon of geopolitical fragmentation, the discussion will evaluate the implications of sanctions for international trade, including trade redirection, trade diversion, and the formation of alternative supply networks. In addition, the seminar will focus on how Turkish firms’ export behavior toward the Russian market has evolved in the post-sanctions period, the sectoral trends that have emerged, and how firms have adapted to changing international economic conditions. The seminar, featuring Prof. Dr. Banu Demir Pakel from Oxford University as the speaker, will provide participants with the opportunity to better understand the role of geopolitics in international trade, to analyze how geopolitical developments transform trade flows, and to assess theimplications of these transformations for the Turkish economy. Participants will also gain an academic perspective on how trade around geopolitics can be analyzed through both theoretical approaches and data-driven empirical methods. Moderated by Dr. Mehmet Saya, the event will be open to researchers, students, and all participants interested in the fields of international trade and geopolitical relations. Held online via Google Meet, the seminar aims to open a discussion on the intersection of trade and geopolitics in light of current global developments and to provide participants with a platform for analytical reflection.
